Silvery Light Sailing contacted us with a very particular set of parameters for a replacement sea water pump on one of their ships, the Volharding, built in 1886. Silvery Light are a charity organisation who seek to promote Community and Youth Sailing, Maritime Heritage and Tall Ship volunteering. They are based in Newry, Northern Ireland.
The sea water pump requirements were as follows:
- The pump needed to function as a deck wash pump and a bilge pump.
- Pump both fresh water and sea water.
- A fire/heat retardant metal enclosure because of the location in the engine room.
- Due to limited space in the engine room, the unit needed to be very compact.
- Use as little power as possible, as it would be powered by a generator.
23B provided a Sea Land stainless steel centrifugal pump with auto-stop, and designed a custom metal enclosure for the pump, with a powder coat finish. We wired the centrifugal pump to a control switch on the bridge and combined it with an auto-stop, therefore the operator does not need to go into the engine room to switch the pump on or off. In addition, we designed the system using the ship’s various existing water changeover manifolds which ensured the least invasive install possible.
The improvements from the old pump included:
- Higher water flow rate and pressure for quicker wash down and bilge pumping.
- A more efficient and lower power electric motor.
- Compliance with marine fire regulations.
- Automatic start up and shut down, therefore eliminating the need for operators climbing in and out of the engine room. This helped increase health and safety onboard.
